Hollyweed

On January 1st 1976, Danny Finegood and friends climbed to the top of Mount Lee and used stones, rope and sheets to change the Hollywood sign into reading Hollyweed. This was done to celebrate that a new marijuana law had been implemented by the state of California. It changed the charge of possession of marijuana from a felony to a misdemeanor. The changing of the sign made front pages around the world.

Richard Harris – I just love drinking and being drunk

Actor and committed rugby fan and player Richard Harris suffered nine broken noses - and not all of them were from playing rugby. Harris was perfectly happy to let his fists do the talking if necessary. He once went on a three-week drinking session with an Irish rugby team after popping out to the shops for a bottle of milk, leaving his wife none the wiser. He summed up his love of the alcohol thus: "I don't drink because I have problems or I want to escape. I just love drinking and being drunk." You can't say fairer than that.

Steven Tyler’s health tips

Aerosmith's Steven Tyler was once asked to share his views on health. "Even in the old days," Tyler said, "we'd make an effort." How so? "When I'd go out to score on Eighth Avenue, I'd get my junk and a chocolate doughnut, but I'd always also pick up one of those pita-pocket health-food sandwiches. You know, something really good for me."

In August 1964 The Beatles meets Bob Dylan for the first time. Dylan is shocked to discover that they're pot virgins and decides to introduce them to miss Mary Jane.

Ringo was the first to try it and he started laughing quite a bit, this made the others want to get in on it. They soon did and there were laughs all around. Paul McCartney was particularly thrilled by marijuana. He said "I'm thinking for the first time, really thinking." He had his friend and roadie Mal Evans follow him around writing down everything he was saying for posterity. Evans kept these notes until his death in 1976. Unfortunately they were confiscated and lost by the police.

Lenny Kravitz’s souvenir

Lenny Kravitz was once invited to Mick Jaggers place after a gig where they had performed on the same stage. Kravitz recalled "We talked the entire night, and smoked marijuana. We shared a joint, and I kept the rest of it for almost a year. It was a sign of respect."

So why did Kravitz only keep the joint for a year? "At one point," he explained, "I had no grass at home..."

Oliver Reed – The death of a badass

Oliver Reed was a hellraiser who relished every opportunity to drink all up to his final moment. During a break from filming Gladiator, where he played the slavemaster, Reed died of a heart attack in a bar on May 2 in 1999. This after beating five Royal Navy sailors at arm-wrestling. Not only were the sailors much younger than him, but Reed was also piss drunk at the time. During his final bar trip, the 61-year-old actor consumed three bottles of Captain Morgan, eight bottles of German beer, and several doubles of Famous Grouse whiskey. The bar where it all happened was called "The Pub" and has since then added "Ollie's Last Pub" to their sign.

Oliver Reed, you were a badass, and for that we salute you.

Belushi’s 50-50 odds

One Friday in 1979, Keith Richards blew into town and invited John Belushi to join him at a party. The pair spent most of the night snorting cocaine. The next morning, Belushi staggered into NBC's studio at Rockefeller Center for a "Saturday Night Live" dress rehearsal. Producer Lorne Michaels was soon informed by a doctor that if Belushi performed as scheduled there was a 50-50 risk he would die. Michaels, who badly needed Belushi on camera, looked at the doctor and replied, "I can live with those odds."

Princess Leia snorts snow on Hoth

During the filming of the Star Wars movies a lot of marijuana was smoked. But the princess of princesses, Carrie Fisher, didn't stop there. While on the set of the ice planet, from The Empire Strikes Back, Carrie snorted cocaine. "I didn't even like coke that much, it was just a case of getting on whatever train I needed to take to get high." Later when filming Blues Brothers, with John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd, Carrie was often drunk and did so much drugs that even Belushi was warning her that she had a problem. And you know you do to much when even Mr Excess himself tells you so.

A six-day cocaine binge

Robert Louis Stevenson, the author of The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, wrote his entire masterpiece in six days and six nights, all whilst on one hell of a cocaine bender. Even Stevenson's wife, Fanny, was amazed that her husband managed to put 60,000 words on paper in just under one week. To put this in perspective, Stephen King, one of today's most productive writers, writes only about 1,000 words a day.
