Bob Dylan introduces The Beatles to marijuana
In August 1964 The Beatles meets Bob Dylan for the first time. Dylan is shocked to discover that they're pot virgins and decides to introduce them to miss Mary Jane.
Ringo was the first to try it and he started laughing quite a bit, this made the others want to get in on it. They soon did and there were laughs all around. Paul McCartney was particularly thrilled by marijuana. He said "I'm thinking for the first time, really thinking." He had his friend and roadie Mal Evans follow him around writing down everything he was saying for posterity. Evans kept these notes until his death in 1976. Unfortunately they were confiscated and lost by the police.
Paul McCartney on cannabis
"I think the 'Just say no' mentality is so crazed. I saw a thing in a women's magazine the other day. 'He smokes cannabis, what am I to do? He laughs it off when I try to tell him, he says it's not really harmful...' Of course you're half hoping the advice will be, 'Well, you know it's not that harmful; if you love him, if you talk to him about it, tell him maybe he should keep it in the garden shed or something,' you know, a reasonable point of view. But of course it was, 'No, no, all drugs are bad. Librium's good, Valium's good. But cannabis, ooooh!' I hate that unreasoned attitude."
